JIS was the fasest 1/2 mile track. You could race side by side all the way around. The track was open in 1968 and closed in 1986. Everyone came to JIS to race, even Marty Robbins.

This is Marty Robbins Modified 33 Ford Coupe that he drove in the 60's. (You know I like the old cars) In the 70's and 80's Marty ran in many NASCAR races. He finished 13th in the 1980 Talladega 500.

I heard a true story about Marty Robbins pulling off the track while winning a race at Nashville because he was scheduled to sing at the Grand Ole Opry and had to go get ready for the show.

JIS was the fastest 1/2 mile track. You could race side by side all the way around. The track was open in 1968 and closed in 1986. Everyone came to JIS to race, even Marty Robbins. Wasn't this the home track of Lake speed? I attended JIS in 64, it was a very nice place. So it opened before 68. Armond Holly ran a rear engine Mod that looked like a Ind. car. That is if it's was the one west of Jackson on I-20. ;)Great Picture thanks for sharing

I don't know if Lake raced at JIS or not. I'm sure he must have. I'll ask around and see what I can find out. Lake was out winning Go Karts championships from the early 60's through 1978. JIS opened it's gates on July 6 1968. It was actually off I-20 about a mile West of Clinton. Before that they raced on 1/4 mile Dirt at the Jackson Sports Arena on Hwy 49 North. Very good question....

Ok, I emailed my racing buddy Jack Brown about Lake Speed and here 's what he had to say:
"He did race at JIS. Both he and his brother Joe ran Clinton for a couple of years. When Lake first started NASCAR it was a limited schedule and he ran here on off weekends. He won a 200 lap All-Pro sanctioned here once running Nicky Prejean's car. This was a Camaro usually driven by Rusty Wallace, but Nicky got Lake to drive it that week to drw a big crowd. Nicky was from Gonzales, La and he, Lake and I all raced go karts together both here and in Gonzales. Nicky owned Southland Fire extinguisher Co. and make a bunch of money from La oil Co. business when to "oil patch" was booming in south La. Lake also won a couple of features in his own late model stock. He also drove a dirt car a couple of times in Meridian and even ran Larry Ritter's (another ol go kart buddy) dirt car at Byram and D'Lo on weekend a couple of years ago.. I called him up one night last summer just to visit and he was telling me about how he was racing "vintage go karts" now. He was going to Indiana to race a McCulloch powered Kart for some old friend. He called back later and said he'd won. I told him we were fooling around with vintage stock cars and he said he'd come look at them next time he came to Jackson."
I guess you could say JIS was Lake Speed's "Home Track"

In 64 is was too young to go into the Pits but I was faster then the man at the gate. When the Dirt track Closed in Jackson (1967) Dad stopped racing. He let friends take "Miss Chicken" to Laurel and Meridian for races but we didn't go. In the 70's it was Girls and Cars. Started following racing (NASCAR) again in the 80's. I've always been a race fan.

[quote author=roundrebel board=old thread= Harold, wasn't Armond Holly from Columbus[/quote]Carl I believe Armond Holly and Arvil Cooper went to school at New Hope and started racing at the old Capitol Hill race track, where Martin Tractor Co. is now in 1950. When the kelly boy got killed in 51, they closed the track. The New Hope Coach and Ag. teacher had race cars running in this little garden. Maybe someone can help us with this, but most are dead and gone, Ed Belk, Jack Olosby and Paul Stratton raced out there.

I saw your question yesterday about Armond Holly. Out of the blue I received this article from a friend yesterday also. It's from a 1971 Mississippi Sportsman Magazine. Thought I'd Pass it along.
