Week 9 Talladega Short Track Eastaboga, AL 4-29-06
This week we had to fight the NASCAR crowd as they camped for several miles down Speedway Boulevard in Talladega, Alabama. Our spirits were somber after two of our touring drivers lost their mother to cancer. On Tuesday, I had agreed to and was honored to officiate the services on Friday in Maryville. I was able to meet their great family on Thursday night at the wake. The Funeral went so much better for the family knowing that their Mom, Sister, or Grandma was a Christian and that she was in the best possible place for eternity. Please remember them in your prayers for comfort and peace. Also on Tuesday night I was blessed to be able to have a prayer dinner with another driver/friend who was to have back surgery on Wednesday and one more surgery later in May on the 17th. The surgery went well and God has been ahead of each schedule the doctors had reported to the family. Please pray as he recovers and prepares for the last surgery for strength and endurance. Anyways, Saturday we arrive at Talladega short track and we walked the pits talking with each team and driver as we handed out the last hundred of our Mel Kenyons’ testimony tracts. It is a blessing to be able to plant small seeds with each conversation when God asks me to and we pray for great soil. At the drivers meeting I shared with all view of Christianity from an email I received not to long ago. It talked of a professor who tried his best to teach the students Christianity but they would have no part of understanding. To make a long story short, He recruited a boy named Joe to do ten push-ups for each student. Then the professor brought about three dozen cream filled mega donuts on a Friday afternoon to class. He asked the first row of students one at a time if they would like a donut and each said yes. Then he would ask Joe to do 10 push-ups for each. After about ten students the mood in the class changed. The next student, an athlete named Steve wanted to do his own push-ups to receive the donut but that was not allowed, so he said no and the teacher asked Joe would he do ten push-ups for Steve to have a donut he doesn’t want. Joe said yes and pushed out ten as the teacher left a donut on his desk Soon Joe was loosing energy and strength. Each push-up was difficult and sweat started to pour into the floor. After 20 or so students saying yes and no to the donut Joe was shaking and his arms red. Then a new student came in the door and the whole class shouted “leave”. But the teacher still asked the new student if he would like a donut. He said yes not knowing what was going on. Joe wanted to do 10 push-ups for the new student to have one but that did not make them easy. Many in the class were crying as more than 30 students had donuts whether they wanted them or not. The last two girls were very popular at school and one asked, “Can I help him?” The teacher replied, “No, this is something only Joe could do because you see Joe is the only one who has a perfect grade in this class.” “The rest of you have either failed a test, skipped a class, or are less than perfect in most things.” Joe had pushed out 350 pushups when all donuts were paid for when he collapsed in a pool of sweat. There was not one dry eye in the class as the teacher quoted scriptures, which I read to the drivers and crews, in Isaiah 53 and closed with the statement, “It’s already paid for; you would be foolish to leave it on the desk.” What must you do you ask? Confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead and you will be saved! I prayed for those who were lost and for a safe race and God blessed and answered. The race was run and we headed out through the wildest, craziest, worldliest crowd of people wallowing in sinful pleasures which took over two hours to get through 5 miles. When we got halfway home it was 4 a.m. and we had to stop in Chattanooga to sleep. Oh the fields are ripe pray for the laborers!!!! Thanks for your prayers and support as we travel and preach and teach the Word. May God bless you more than you can imagine.
