Week 19 Carolina N.C. & Wytheville VA 7/9 & 10/06
It was an unusual weekend of ministry this time. We had a Sunday night race in North Carolina and a Monday night show in Virginia. At Carolina, the race was in memory of Skyler Trull, a girl that battled leukemia and lost the fight at age 5. She was a bundle of joy and happiness. A lot of her time was spent at this speedway, Carolina Speedway with her parents and friends. Around 7,000 dollars was raised for Make-A-Wish foundation and they brought a guest of honor who has less than one foot of intestine and unknown time of life. In the pits Christopher and I handed out Christian Sport magazines, racers prayers, 10 commandment coins, and our remaining million dollar bill tracts. At the church service in the stands God was glorified, lives were touched and seeds were planted by a few of my Christian brothers from that area. Shortly after, at the drivers meeting I spoke on Colossians 1:10, how we are to walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work. I started with a story from ODB about a first grader who was so tickled to get a “100% Great Job” on his spelling test. The boy showed his mom and dad the paper because he knew it would please them. I could just see him riding that bus home, hardly able to wait for the moment his parents would express their excitement with how well he had done. Making mom and dad happy was obviously a very important motivating factor in his life. I shared that the apostle Paul tried to explain this in several ways for people to understand and apply it. To soldiers he used the image of pleasing their commanding officer, for fighters to fight not to hit air but the target, and racers to race to finish well and win not just to be riding. Then I shared that Christ in the garden also wanted to please His father. In his humanity, our Savior desired that the cup would pass from Him. Nevertheless he prayed, “Not my will, but yours, be done. (Luke 22.42) Jesus’ supreme motive was a desire to please His Father. That should be our incentive too. At the end of the day, though as filthy rags, was I in God’s will or way. Skyler has gone on to be with the Lord, but for us the time is unknown. Christians need to walk in such a manner daily that would please our heavenly Father and that he is glorified. I prayed for safety, and many requests mentioned below and God heard my cry.
Monday I drove to Wytheville, VA to open Ray Cook’s Southern National Series which will be 11 races in 13 days. Many more prayer requests were offered by drivers, crew members, and officials. Each team received from us a, flags of life/Christian life tract. At the drivers meeting, I encouraged all to set the pace, (I Cor. 9:24) and endure. Starting a new race and many running for the point’s championship is going to be a long road and a difficult task. I spoke of the first NASCAR race at Darlington Speedway in 1960. That day 75 drivers qualified for the big show and all started the race, each with their own plans and strategies to win. The race was for 334 laps which totaled 500 miles. Curtis Turner started on the pole with a blazing lap of 84.03 mph. The slowest car was that of Johnny Mantz at a mere 73.460 mph. Turner, Sosebee, and Cotton Owens swapped the lead several times during the 1st 100 miles. They had prepared the fastest, most powerful cars with intent to win the race. Johnny Mantz had set a different pace, his car was the smallest and lightest and instead of racing tires he mounted durable, hard truck tires that could last well over 500 miles on any of his vehicles. As others set blistering paces and made numerous pit stops for fuel, fresh tires, and repairs, Johnny just drove a steady pace. He took the lead at around the 120 mile mark and won by a small margin of 9 LAPS over second place Fireball Roberts. I encouraged the guys to run a smart race, and set a pace not to tire too early. As Christians, our daily walk should be the same. We must set a pace to finish well by staying in the Word, prayer, fellowship, and obeying God’s commands. I prayed first for each to become a Christian who may not have been, then for Christians to set a pace to finish well and pleasing the Father, and third for safety. God provided safety and the gospel was spoke at two new tracks again this week for Dirt Racing Outreach.
This ministry is backed by several people praying and God directed donations. This week especially the racing community is counting on us to talk to God with and for them.
