It is midnight. A soldier sits in his foxhole reading his bible by flashlight. Out of no where, an explosion erupts. He throws down his bible and grabs his M-16. Someone shouts that there is enemy movement to the North. He rushes for cover. Standing behind the armored truck he sees the enemy coming through the night. Heavy gunfire begins. Bullets hitting all around him. He raises his gun and begins to fire. Red traces from the bullets rip threw the air. The enemy is getting closer. Now he can their see faces. He continues to fire. As he turns to his right he sees a man rushing towards him. He turns and fires. The man is down. The fighting stops. All clear! The soldier walks toward the man down; M-16 pointed on him, watching for movement. He is dead. As the soldier stands over there, he thanks God that he has survived this gun battle, he then prays to God that he will be forgiven for killing a man.
I can only imagine what a Christian soldier goes through when they have been taught so much that it is wrong to kill. On one hand (Matthew 5:21) says; You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment. And on the other hand (Ecclesiastes 3:3) says; A time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build. (Ecclesiastes 3:8) 8: a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.
No one wants to takes another person’s life. It has to be as hard for a non-Christian soldier as it does for the Christian soldier. I pray to God for all the soldiers in battle. I pray for peace and their safe return. I pray that they find peace in themselves with the things they have to do. May God bless them all.
This was laid on my heart a couple of days ago. I did not write it to battle the issue whether we should be in Iraq now or not. I wrote it for all to think about those men and women and the struggle they face with this kind of thing. I wrote it for all of us to pray for those fighting, that they find peace in their hearts and for God’s hand to guide them.
